Protecting Tamil civilians Army's sacred duty: Tamil leader
Colombo (PTI): A senior Tamil leader has asked the Sri Lankan security forces, engaged in heavy fighting with LTTE, to protect the lives of the civilians as a sacred duty cast on them, while accusing the Tigers of keeping the common people in the embattled areas as human shields.
"We expect the army that liberated 95 per cent of the area under the LTTE, with minimum casualties, will not do anything in haste to end the war quickly," President, Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) V Anandasangaree has said.
"I want to tell the gallant soldiers that they have already won the war with no hopes for the LTTE to regain any parts of the territory. But the civilian lives, they have to protect as a sacred duty cast on them, in defence of the nation," he said in a statement here.
The people expect the soldiers to act with caution and not to spoil their name that they had earned by sacrificing a lot of their beloved comrades, he said.
Anandasangaree also expresses concern over the poor plight of the civilians in the embattled Wanni in the Northern region of Sri Lanka.
"I am distressed over the unhappy news reaching from Wanni, about the unusually heavy casualties in the war front, from the time the forces set their feet on the Wanni soil," Anandasangaree said.
"Only two days back the whole of Europe, Scandinavia, Canada, USA and India believed the LTTE's canard that over 5,000 soldiers had been taken as captives and a large number of them were killed."
